Everyone is busy making plans for the 4th of July, one of America’s most celebrated holidays. However much fun Americans have this day, the environment always seems to suffer. Everything from increased traffic and trash to the boom and pop of fireworks takes its toll on our atmosphere. There are, however, a few small changes you can consider that will make this holiday a little less taxing on the earth.
Fireworks
Who doesn’t love the beauty and thrill of a spectacular fireworks display except of course maybe your dog? According to chemistry experts, no other pyrotechnical application pollutes the environment more than fireworks. You can see and smell that when you watch a fireworks show. Yet, each 4th of July millions of people cram stadiums and gather in backyards for the finale to a day in the sun and fun. We are told that there are companies working on cleaner fireworks that will not eat away at our ozone layer. For now, try to join a big group viewing instead of buying your own fireworks. The fewer shows, the better.
Transportation
Many people take road trips on the 4th of July heading to the beach, lake, campground or just to get together with friends. If you plan to gas up and hit the road this holiday, consider carpooling or even taking a bus or a train. By taking an alternate form of transportation, you will help to cut down on holiday traffic and gas emissions.
Holiday Picnic
Lots of people enjoy a holiday picnic on July 4th. The amount of trash in America almost triples on this day and makes are already overflowing landfills groan. Instead of opting for plastic plates, cups and cutlery, bring reusable. In addition, shop for your food locally. Visit your local farmer’s market before you picnic and stock up on fresh goodies. Shopping locally is a great way to show your support for you community and local farms.
Go Vegan or Grass-Fed for the Day
Hotdogs and hamburgers are to the 4th of July as apple pie is to America. Consider going meatless this holiday or even choose some local, grass fed meat for your barbecue. IT is estimated that over 100 billion gallons of water and 70 million gallons of gas would be saved if everyone in our country ate a vegan meal on the 4th of July.
Consider How you Grill
Grilling is the gig on the 4th of July as millions of Americans fire up their grills for dinner. All that charcoal puts a tremendous strain on our natural resources. It is easy for us to reduce our carbon footprint just by changing the way we grill. Consider switching to a natural gas grill as it is the cleanest burning fossil fuel. If you want to use charcoal, make the switch to natural charcoal that is made from furniture scraps and waste wood. Be sure to keep your grill clean so that grease does not build up and cause unnecessary smoke. Trimming fat from your meat will help with this.
As we march towards July 4th, 2013, think of what you and your family can do to lighten the load on our earth!
